Percentage of scientists that support current evolution theory?

Better question: In the era of Expelled, with vigilant Darwin lobbies protecting their turf, what percentage can afford to disagree?

A religious scientist friend writes to say,

I would like to see a true study on this question. Several years ago, I surveyed several hundred 1st and 2nd year biology students. The question was 'Do you believe that the origin and diversity of life can be completely explained by natural processes with no divine help whatsoever?' About 40% of first year students answered in the affirmative. The positive answers actually decreased for the 2nd year students down to about 35%. This was not a academic survey, but it was done in class in a completely secular university and virtually all the 1st and 2nd year students were covered. The wording of the question is very important. For example, 'Do you believe in evolution?' would be a extremely poor question to ask. I would expect that most university biology professors would hold to Darwinian theory, but I would expect that far fewer would total exclude God. I think many would still see the need for God to overcome the fantastic improbabilities.
I wonder how many would even tell an outside surveyor what they really thought, as opposed to starting to huff about "science finding the answers".

No problem with science finding the answers, but have we decided what the questions are yet, or what answers we can accept? For example, if it turns out that life could not have arisen by chance within the age of this universe, can we accept that as a finding? Or dies it mean that the scientists who demonstrate it have "failed" in someway?

These are the sorts of questions to which we increasingly need honest answers.
