• Join the Spiritual colition agianst Richard Dawkins' new show

Richard Dawkins, the self-appointed cop of enlightenment rationality is at it again, his new show on BBC's Channel 4 is called "The Enemies of Reason" - no he's not finally come round to our common sense point of view, he's flailing his blunt atheistic hatchet in ever wider circles, and this time his target is spirituality.

For me, spirituality is one of the most important gifts a human being can have: That ineffable knowledge that something might be out there - our connection with higher-powers, a spiritual realm or even G-d himself. What right does Richard Dawkins have to deny a generation of human beings the comfort of a spiritual life?

Dawkins is exposed as an angry old man - lacking in spirituality himself he is determined that nobody else should enjoy it. Yet, the world abounds with evidence that clearly contradicts Dawkin's unfounded assertions. We all know of accounts of people who have seen living phantasms, or communicated telepathically. Dawkins wants you to believe that your spiritual experiences are nothing but bunk, hallucinations. Is this mere provocation, or has militant Dawkins got a dark agenda - trying to convert the world to his brand of atheism?

I call upon spiritual people of all backgrounds, whether you are a pagan, Buddhist, Hindu, Moslem, Jew or Christan. It's time to inform the BBC that our spiritual beliefs are sacred and that British taxpayers should not be funding this of offence to our most cherished beliefs.

Mr Dawkins should be denied the opportunity to speak about matters of which he clearly has no knowledge. If he stopped his angry atheist act just for a moment, then G-d's spirit might just find a way to enlighten his corrupt soul.

    Peace,

    Helena

His opinion carries about the same weight as yours. He is entitled to his opinion just as you are to yours.

I wholeheartedly agree that Dawkins is "entitled" to his opinion.

And by the way, I would suggest to Helena that she be very cautious with her wording… I'm guessing that when she said Dawkins "should be denied the opportunity to speak about matters of which he clearly has no knowledge." she was talking about a government sponsored opportunity, not about denying Dawkins the opportunity in general.

Having said that, I would say that being entitled to one's opinion doesn't make one's opinion as valid as another's. In other words, Dawkins is certainly entitled to his opinion, and I'll even venture that he should be entitled to express his opinion (albeit not necessarily with government support). But his opinion is based hopelessly on circular reasoning and is therefore not worth considering.

My main reason for commenting is just a minor error in your original posting, You describe the programme as a BBC Channel Four production, as a Brit I can tell you that it is a 'Channel 4' produced programme and not a BBC programme, there is a BBC digital TV channel in the UK known as 'BBC Four' but 'Channel 4' is an independent Television Channel with a strong reputation for controversial broadcasts.

I'm not so sure about banning Dawkin's programme. His literature is abundantly available anyway. Any ban will probably only play into the hands of those who view creationists and Christianity as bigotry and worthy of the dark ages. I appreciate that these are the same individuals who would have very few qualms about burning Bibles and hounding christianity out of society's consciousness, but as we all know tolerance is the new intolerance!

By all means intelligent comment and proper challenges should be made by those with the ability and perhaps the credentials to take on such arguments. But ultimatly leave Dawkins to argue about religion and he will soon hang himself on a scaffold of preposterous arguments. I recently heard of a friend of a friend, not a believer who's reaction to reading the God Delusion was 'Is that it then?"
