    ..but doesn't information need to be instantiated?

    I've always had a problem with this notion. Doesn't information need to be exhibited *by* something.

    Make sense of the notion of self-existing information, and then we can move the discussion forward.

    Maybe it does need to be instantiated, but that doesn't mean it hasn't always existed (it might mean it's not self-existent). And if it does have to be instantiated, does it have to be instantiated by something physical? I would say no, though I'm not sure how I would define instantiation. Maybe something like "involved in a communication channel."

    I think the idea in Darwinian evolution is that information builds itself from scratch. In computers, bits give way to bytes, and bytes of code get compiled back into bits for execution. We can liken this analogy to nature: a bit is a positive, information-adding mutations, a byte is a collection of those mutations in a certain order that makes up a useful function. Then, the useful function, or information, is processed by the living thing and sent into action. Nature instantiates information.
